The Interwebz

Here's an email I came across the other night. Some names have been changed to conceal identities and save face(s). Enjoy--I know I did.

Hey Mom & Dad (& Edgar)
I'll call tomorrow and make sure you've gotten this email and have read it thoroughly.

I cannot argue that our materialistic society has created a multitude of
people who can imagine nothing but a disposable world where someone will
take up the slack for their callous misuse of themselves and everything
around them. Most of these people have adopted this world view from the way
they live every day. And do you know the way in which they live? They live
like capitalists. They live like everyone indoctrinated by the Western
world. They live like you and I live.
Why should they take care of themselves if someone else will care for them?

Why should any of us care about the third world citizens half way round the
world who make the glut disposable crap we buy everyday?

We don't have to look them in the eye and try to justify ourselves, because
we cant.

Why should any of us care about petroleum companies arming militias to kill
indigenous peoples who are upset about their destroyed lands?

We don't have to look them in the eye or see the destruction caused by my
greed, your greed and the greed of so many others.

So you see, our culture does need to change, but on a level so far beyond
anything we can conceive that most people don't know what to do when
confronted with the truth.
Also, aren't you the same people working yourselves into a frenzy about how
"the government wants to take control and tell everyone what to do". You
are passing judgment and saying this other persons way of life is something
you don't want to re responsible for. But we are all responsible for this,
myself included as much as the next person. We don't smoke or live on beer
and pretzels, but we are just as responsible, and I for one am not about to
be the hypocrite to say someone else is wrong.

I was upset about this issue before, now I am angry. Don't hide behind
silence again. I want answers now. Justify yourselves, tell me I am wrong,
fight with whatever you have. At the very least tell me God loves this
country so I may have a rueful laugh.
Whenever you don't reply I know I've hit the truth and you have nothing to
refute me with. If you have anything, put it forward. But if you don't,
then consider for a second that I may at least be headed in the right
direction. I'm not perfect nor are my arguments, but they are damn sure
better than anything I've found so far.
